Education Workers Prepare

In this podcast from Education is a Right, Laura Walton President of the Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU) discusses how her union is organizing to be ready for whatever negotiations with the newly re-elected Ontario government brings. OSBCU is CUPE’s K-12 education division which represents some 55,000 education workers in the public, Catholic, English, and French school systems across Ontario. The union officially served notice to bargain last week.

These workers were the front-lines during the pandemic in the schools, many of whom remained in schools when they were shut down. They are some of the lowest paid and overworked in the K-12 education system who have not seen their already low wages keep up with inflation. The interview was conducted at a provincial conference of OSBCU members held in Windsor where they discussed their preparations for the start of negotiations up to and including the possibility of strike action.
