The Election Result in Windsor West

In Windsor West the major result was a voter turnout of 33.32%, a drop of 10% from the last election. In other words 77% of the eligible electorate in the riding did not cast a ballot for any candidate. Windsor West has had the lowest voter turnout already in the last election but this was a new low.

There was no significant increase for the PCs in the riding, while the NDP vote dropped by roughly 7,000 votes, but was still enough to re-elect MPP Lisa Gretzky. Like in the other ridings in the area It appears that the increase in non-voters were those who had previously voted NDP.

Why the turnout is so low in the riding would be a great concern if the parties in power were interested in addressing the reasons why so many have refused to participate. However, election after election the low turnout becomes a statistic to report rather than a serious indication of the disempowerment of the vast majority of the people and the need for renewal of a political process which gives rise to such results.
