Documentary: Black History in Southwestern Ontario

CPAC, the Canadian Public Affairs Channel is airing a documentary about important and historic sites in Southwestern Ontario that show the ways in which freedom seekers organized to liberate themselves from the transatlantic slave trade using the Underground Railroad.. The documentary includes interviews with the descendants of those freedom seekers who uphold their legacy in the present. We encourage you to watch it here.

The description from CPAC says “Canadian journalist Brandy Yanchyk explores Southwestern Ontario where she learns about the Underground Railroad and the history of the Freedom Seekers who came to Canada and helped build a large, vibrant Black community in the country. Brandy visits the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum, the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society & Black Mecca Museum and Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site. She also meets with Teajai Travis, a descendant of Underground Railroad travellers and with educator Irene Moore Davis at the Tower of Freedom in Windsor.”
