Support for Striking Windsor Salt Workers on International Women’s Day

On March 8, International Women’s Day, a spirited rally was held at the picket line of Windsor Salt workers. The rally expressed support for the striking workers and for the opposition of the workers in Windsor-Essex, Ontario to the introduction of U.S. union-busting law firms to try and break the workers’ resistance to the contracting out of their work. Speaking to those gathered, on behalf of the Empower Yourself Now organization, Laura Chesnik highlighted that it was most fitting that on International Women’s Day, a day synonymous with the fight for the rights of women for equality, to be heard, and as workers in their own right, that a rally was being held on the picket line. She expressed the appreciation of the community for the workers’ defence of their rights and in so doing, the rights of all. Those who attended spoke to the workers and learned more about their fight and the work they do to produce salt, which is critical to so many production and commercial processes; from road safety, to food production and preservation, to keeping pools hygienic, and to chemical production.
